Keith Gillespie, Liverpool, Trinity Mirror 2013 ISBN: 9781908695192

A good read but a sad story of someone who had great talent. He was a young Manchester United player in the days of Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and Neville. He went on to play 200 games for Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers. But he was a compulsive gambler, losing an estimated £8 million. The book recounts also failed marriage and regular bouts of binge drinking – including when preparing for big games.

There are one of two references to faith: “Mum had become a born-again Christian. Her faith was very important to her; she stopped drinking alcohol and devoted time to the church”. At another place he refers to his mum praying for him. A sad story reminiscent of Paul Merson
