If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

Faith and Sport Revival in Britain

Return to the book list for this category.

Muscular Christianity and Beyond, Michael Collins and Andy Parker, Stadion: International Journal of the History of Sport, 2009, 35:193-210.

The article surveys sport in Protestantism and Public Schools from the 19th century, looking at the Muscular Christianity movement as well as sport in Victorian Society. This leads into a brief section on the growth of sports ministry in the UK and USA.

There is a three page section “Sport Faith and outreach in the 21st century” which deals mainly with the development of the University of Gloucester courses in Sport and Christian outreach.

Under the heading sport and the multi-faith agenda there is a section on a somewhat neglected topic, the role of sport in the Muslim community.

A major strength of the article is the 61 endnotes replete with references.
