"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play…it is war minus the shooting."

George Orwell

Sleepless

Your laws are so fair that I wake up and praise you in the middle of the night. Psalm 119:62

What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night? It is often a sign that we are anxious about something - the big game or an issue in life. As humans we find it hard not to be anxious about the future.

In sport we are only one tackle away from a career-ending injury. Coaching must be the most precarious profession on the planet. A few weeks ago the Sunday Times ran a headline "Ramos's job is safe". By the time the paper was on the streets, Tottenham Hotspur had fired their head coach, Juande Ramos!

Next time you wake up anxious, practise the discipline of thinking about God's word and praising him. As we realize that God's word "has stood the test of time" (v52) and that it "will last as long as the heavens" (v89), we can have confidence that in it we will find the help we need. As we give our problems to God, we can claim the promise that he will "give peace of mind to all who love your law" (v 165).

PS If all else fails, get up and read Psalm 119, all 176 verses!
