"It matters a great deal who is going to win, but not at all who won"

Willie John McBride, Irish Rugby player

Believing the impossible

Do you ever find it impossible to believe? Sometimes it is hard. “Science has disproved religion” we are told. As sportspeople we are constantly told that our value is determined by our performance. We strive to perform better.

Yet the gospel message is that we cannot achieve God’s A standard no matter how much we try. The way to salvation is to recognize that we cannot do it ourselves and to accept what Jesus has done for us by dying on the cross. To quote Graham Kendrick’s song, “I have put my faith in crucified man.

But doesn’t it all seem impossible that the execution of a Jewish man 2000 years ago could change my eternal destiny? Paul saw the problem writing, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing” before adding “but to us who are being saved, [the message of the cross] is the power of God” (1 Corinthians1:18)

It seems impossible that the death of Jesus can make me right with God.
It seems impossible that Jesus could love me enough to die for me.
It seems impossible that I am not considered good enough to spend eternity with Jesus.

Perhaps the Queen of Hearts is right that we need to believe six impossible things before breakfast! If you can believe my list of three to start with you are ready to deal with anything practice, competition or life can throw at you.
