“All I know most surely about morality and obligation I owe to football”,
God’s treasured possession
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Deuteronomy 7:6We live in a performance-driven world. It is inevitable that we get caught up in it to some extent. If you are a golfer, swimmer, track and field athlete etc then times, scores, heights and distances are important to determine your ranking and place in the hierarchy.
As a Christian you are first of all defined, not by what you have achieved but by who you are – God’s treasured possession. And it gets better. It is not something you have earned or deserved. It is what God has done for you.
He has chosen you;
He has made you holy;
He has made you part of his people;
He has called you his treasured possession.
That all means that our value as people does not depend on how well out last game, race, competition has gone. You are no less valuable when you are injured or not selected. You are still God’s treasured possession.
The root meaning of the word for treasure is the king’s personal fortune or something like that. That tells you how special you are to God. The next time you have a difficult training session or a bad game or race, remind yourself that you are God’s treasured possession and you always will be.
