"Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that."

Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football manager

Psalm 112

Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered for ever. Psalm 112:6

It is easy to read a verse like this and say “but that is just not true!” To understand what the psalmist is saying we need to read the whole Psalm and see this verse in context.

In verse 4 we read: “Even in darkness light dawns for the upright”. So it is clear that the writer recognizes that believers in God are not exempt from the problems of life. JH Eaton writes: “It is not said that that the godly are free of troubles, rather that they can pass through the troubles with a firm and trusting heart”.

The key is in verse 1: “Blessed are those who fear the LORD”. If we have the right relationship with God, we are prepared for whatever life throws at us. We may feel shaken by injury, illness, loss of a loved-one, lack of a sponsor, loss of form etc.

In verse 6 we read “they will be remembered for ever” and in verse 3 “their righteousness endures for ever”. If you think about it, only God can make “forever promises”.

Be encouraged as you face difficulties by God’s forever promises.
