"God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast and when I run, I feel his pleasure."

Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire

Peace in our time

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. 2 Thessalonians 3:16

The technological developments in the past 50 years have been beyond belief. Just pause to think of a few examples. One thing that has become obvious this year as we have seen the world as we know it close down, is that there are limits to what science and technology can achieve. Who could have conceived of a time when all sport, all foreign travel, shopping, restaurants, even church attendance would close down. The biggest decision I take each day is the route of the 1 hour walk for which our government allows me to forsake my life of house-arrest.

We rely so much on technology for modern life, and rightly so, but one thing technology can never bring is peace. Paul’s words are a great comfort. Our God is not only the creator and sustainer of the universe, He is the Lord of peace. And it gets better because he also gives us peace. And he gives it “at all times and in every way”. Part of the peace-giving is His presence with us. Let us remember that our God is the source of peace and ask Him to give us peace as we negotiate such challenging times.
