“Knowing Christ is the best thing that has ever happened to me, although winning the US Open was a pretty good second.”

Today

Encourage one another as long as it is called “today”. Hebrews 3:13

The writer to the Hebrews makes several references to “today” (3:7, 13, 15, 4:7 etc). The point seems to be to encourage us to see today as a day of opportunity and possibilities. The old proverb says “Never put off to tomorrow, what you can do today”. The context of Hebrews 3 seems to be that the writer is saying: if God is speaking to you, act on it today, don’t leave it. The writer adds that if we fail to take action then we may miss out on what God has promised for our future.

Another challenge in our verse is the reference to “one another”. The Christian life is not a solitary existence; it is to be lived in community. We have a responsibility to and for each other. I was recently at an athletics event and was walking out with a senior coach. He saw a young athlete and stopped to say “You can really well today. I think you can achieve a lot this summer”. Think what an encouragement that must have been to the young athlete.

As you go through your “today” be alert to God speaking or prompting and be ready to respond. And look for opportunities to encourage someone.
