"I love the sense of satisfaction that I get when I’ve done a swimming workout or race, and know that I gave my whole being and heart to God in every moment of the swim. It’s the best worship I can offer him."

Penny Heyns

Nature of Faith

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see Hebrews 11:1

Hebrews 11 is the chapter which catalogues the heroes of faith, how they lived and what they were able to do because of their faith. By the time we get to Hebrews 13, faith is still the theme but the writer is showing how practical faith is.

Over the next few weeks we will look in detail at faith and how it can be applied to our sportslife. Today we will set the scene and have an overview. Writing in Scripture Union, Encounter with God, Robert Solomon said: “Faith has a daily shape that should please God. It is not passive but active in its devotion to God and in its good deeds”.

As we reflect on what it means to represent Jesus in the world of sport, the answer from Hebrews 13 is a very practical one. It can be summed up by – avoiding sin and doing good. Sexual sin, money, empty worship, insubordination are to be avoided. Living out our faith in support involves grace, love, caring for people, respecting others etc offering praise to God.
